Our Yarn

Cashmere

We make our 100% cashmere scarves and hats from honest-to-goodness real pure cashmere, which is guaranteed to be free of foreign fibres. It’s been handled with loving care all along the road to you, so you’re sure to get the softest, fluffiest cashmere in the world from Tinker Knitwear.

We get our cashmere yarn from the premier yarn spinner in Scotland. The spinner, in turn, gets the raw cashmere fibre from China, where Scottish experts select and purchase only the finest quality fibre in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. That fibre comes from the rare and precious undercoat of the Kashmir goat. After it’s been selected, the fibre is subject to the most stringent sampling and testing procedures, and it’s dyed in loose stock to preserve its unique softness. The yarn is then “mule spun,” a procedure that produces a loftier yarn than that spun by other methods. In mule spinning, yarns are drawn, spun and relaxed, then wound about six feet at a time. This relaxation of the tension lets the yarn become fluffier.

Cared for properly, garments made with this cashmere yarn will get even softer with age, and will be with you for years to come.

Worsted Wool

Worsted wool is firm-textured, compactly twisted woolen yarn made from long-staple fibres combed so that the fibres lay parallel. Worsted is a Middle English word which has its origin in the Norfolk village of Worthstede, now called Worstead. We use worsted wool in our socks because of its durability, its resilience, and its ability to wick moisture away from the skin. Our worsted wool comes from a spinner in Maine. Our worsted wool products have gone through a mothproofing process.
