Caring for Your Garments

Cleaning

Cashmere: Dry clean or wash by hand in cool water (30 degrees C). Rinse in lukewarm water several times. Lay flat to dry at room temperature. Press using a cool iron with a damp cloth. Alternatively, dry clean.

Worsted Wool: Dry clean or hand wash in cool water and lay flat to dry.

Storage

Cashmere, being a natural fiber, is vulnerable to attack by clothes moths. Our worsted wool has been treated so as to be mothproof.

Your first line of defence is to keep your clothes clean (see above), as moths are especially attracted to clothing stained from beverages, oil from hair, and sweat. Moths are destructive during their larval stage, hence you may not even know they are there.

When you’re putting your winter clothing away for summer storage, pack clean garments in airtight containers along with a moth-repellant. The best, most pleasant remedy is said to be a lavender-oil sachet. Cedar chips, balls, and blocks are also sold for this purpose, although they are said to last only a few years before losing their effectiveness. Alternatively, you may use moth balls or moth flakes, but they don’t smell nearly as good and the chemical in them is poisonous.

When you take this kind of care, your Tinker Knitwear garments will be with you for years and years to come.
